Other attractions within the harbor are the picturesque village of Strahan and the crumbling ruins of a penal colony on Sarah Island where convicts built amazing ships from precious Huon pine unique to the area. The convicts called the narrow opening and turbulent waters into the harbor ' Hells Gate'.
