International staffing of NATO’s regional HQs
NATO’s new regional headquarters have reached the second stage of capability. International staff are now in place at sites in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. The NATO Force Integration Units or NFIUs are based in the eastern part of the Alliance. They will help facilitate the rapid deployment of Allied forces to the region, support collective defence planning and assist in coordinating training and exercises. The roll out of the NFIUs was agreed at the Wales Summit 2014. The units are part of measures in the Readiness Action Plan, designed to provide assurance for NATO allies. Each NFIU will be manned by a total of 40 staff, half of them coming from the host nation. Footage includes shots from NFIUs in Lithuania and Romani.
Using Non Lethal Weapon
NATO led testing of non-lethal weapons aims to trial different systems and how military personnel use them. In the North Sea, near Zeebrugge, Belgian, German and Dutch forces conduct a boarding scenario of a suspicious vessel with a combination of rifles, loudspeakers, lasers and water guns to see how best to give enforcers an additional option to safely deescalate a potentially dangerous situation.

In Parnu, southern Estonia, more than 1,200 Estonian and Latvian volunteer troops, a section of the National Guard, take part in exercise Hurricane. The annual exercise is to improve troop capability and test them in a realistic war scenario. The Estonian volunteers form part of the Estonian Defence League, a network of fully equipped volunteer soldiers present in each municipality. Their role is to provide immediate response in the event of an attack.

NATO's Deployable Command Centre
The ARRC is usually based in Gloucester UK, however it is currently deployed in Lielvarde, Latvia on exercise Arrcade Fusion. Commanded by Lieutenant General Tim Evans, the exercise tests the ARRC’s ability to set up a large headquarters quickly and efficiently, and also to control simulated troop formations in a fictional security or humanitarian crisis.

You have to stick together and fight together to have the maximum effect and be responsive to whatever crisis." "The big advantage of air is that it's very fast. we use it for everything, for transport of personnel and material, we use it for delivery of weapons systems, we use it for med evac for example - to get wounded people out of the theatre." 1st Lieutenant Christopher Nelson, Apache Pilot, US army: "Our role in this whole operation is to manage the flow of what goes on in the airspace ensuring we providing security for ground troops to get where they need to go, and providing security for once they get there when they're on the battlefield, and that's the integration from air to the ground. Ground forces are also going to be integrating with many of our NATO adjacent aircraft and it's absolutely critical we're not just familiar with our own air frames but the air frames of our adjacent nations." Lt Col Wim Shoepen, Detachment Commander, 17th Squadron: "The aircraft present are from Belgium four helicopters, the Czech Republic four helicopter and six fixed wing, from the Ukraine one Ilyushin-76, and of course the Americans with their Chinooks, Blackhawks and Apache helicopters. the fact that we even have some non-NATO people present here like the Ukrainian transport aircraft means that actually this is an exercise that goes beyond NATO, also with the Partnership for Peace."
Fighter jets from NATO’s air policing mission scramble to intercept aircraft on an almost daily basis. Speed, efficiency and effective communication channels are all required.

NATO Exercise Ends in Show of Force
Trident Juncture 2015, NATO’s biggest exercise in more than a decade, has ended with a show of force in Spain and Portugal. 36,000 troops from 28 Allies and nine partner nations were involved in the month-long training across Italy, Spain and Portugal. One of the reasons for holding Trident Juncture was to certify the command of NATO’s quick reaction force, the NATO Response Force, for 2016. Next year Spain will lead the spearhead of this force, known as the VJTF, which will have some elements ready to move within two to three days.

NATO's Maritime Forces
Nineteen NATO nations are contributing navy and marine forces to Trident Juncture 2015, the Alliance’s biggest and most ambitious exercise in more than a decade. More than 70 ships and submarines, maritime patrol aircraft and 3,000 marines are taking part in the maritime portion of the exercise taking place off the coast of Portugal, Spain and Italy and at NATO’s Maritime Command in the United Kingdom.
NATO Response Force
NATO's quick reaction force, the NATO Response Force (NRF) deploys quickly, wherever needed, covers a broad range of security challenges from crisis management to collective defence. In 2005, the NRF helped secure Afghanistan's parliamentary elections. It is also used for disaster relief, supporting victims of Hurricane Katrina and assisting the relief effort following the 2005 Pakistan earthquake. In 2014, NATO Allies agreed to a new "Spearhead Force" within the NRF known as the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force. The Force has 5,000 troops supported by air, maritime and special forces, ready to move within two to three days.

NATO's Land Forces
NATO's land forces are being put to the test during exercise Trident Juncture 2015. Forces from 16 NATO Allies are participating in exercises ranging from urban combat operations to airborne jumps. NATO relies on effective cooperation between land, air, sea and special forces.
NATO Special Operations Forces in Exercise Trident
Over 1,000 Special Operations Forces personnel, from 10 countries, take part in Trident Juncture 2015. They train in high-intensity fighting conditions, testing their interoperability for all possible missions. There are 5 SOF Task Groups, led by: Spain, Portugal, the United States, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Special Forces aren't only from land forces. Special Forces come from the maritime, the marines, the sailors, the air, every soldier together, it’s a kind of joint unique capability and they have the mission in general to conduct very challenging operations to create dominance in a certain area where it is very tense. They’re real warriors to take on a duty if called upon by the nations.
Purpose of Nato Exercise
Military exercises such as Trident Juncture 2015 allow NATO to test procedures and tactics. They offer the opportunity to identify best practices and areas for improvement. These exercises raise the ability of Allied troops to respond to threats from any direction.
Moldova Helps Builds Peace in Kosovo
Since 1999, the Kosovo force, or KFOR, has been providing security in Kosovo, with a current contingent of approximately 5,000 troops from 31 countries (23 NATO and 8 KFOR partners). KFOR is cooperating with and assisting the UN, the EU and other international actors in supporting the development of a stable, democratic, multi-ethnic and peaceful Kosovo. We look at the current role of partner nation Moldova, a country looking to forge closer ties with NATO and Europe, and whose Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) clearing teams ensure a safe environment for the local population as well as other troops in operating in Kosovo.

First US Drones deploy in Europe
Old-school A-10 Warthog ground attack planes and ultra-modern Predator remotely piloted aircraft vie for airspace at Lielvarde airbase in central Latvia. Officials, military personnel and Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis converged on the newly renovated facility to view the Predator in action on its first-ever U.S. deployment in Europe.
Norway's New Fighting Vehicles
Norway has modernized its fleet of infantry fighting vehicles by buying 144 of the latest technologically advanced CV90 vehicles, the biggest procurement project ever for the army. The vehicles will bolster and strengthen two battalions of the Norwegian Army’s mechanized infantry. The country’s Minister of Defence Ine Marie Eriksen Soreide says “We are not only building defence capacities for Norway, but for NATO”. The unveiling took place yesterday in Setermoen, northern Norway.
US leads drill at Sea
On the 1st September the United States and Ukraine, along with 9 other partner nations, launched exercise Sea Breeze 2015 in the Black Sea. With the Ukrainian port city of Odessa acting as a staging point for operations, the 14th annual multinational exercise took place against the backdrop of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the continuing civil war in Ukraine. Naval drills will be conducted at sea, alongside smaller drills at dock and on shore. We take a look at how the troops on the ground of a partner nation like Ukraine and the US work with each other, sharing a common bond of the sea which transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. Footage of joint exercises, including a dramatic helicopter medevac, hand to hand combat and deep sea dive training interspersed with sound bites from both Ukrainian and US naval personnel.
Soviet Planes Descend on Riga
he largest Soviet military plane collection outside the Russian Commonwealth is, surprisingly enough, in Riga, Latvia. The collection has been brought together over last 40 years and the owner, 76-year-old Viktor Talpas, has no plans to stop.
